Athena SWAN

Athena Swan logos

Athena SWAN is a gender charter, administered by Advance HE.

Established in 2005 to encourage and recognise commitment to advancing the careers of women in STEMM employment in higher education, the Charter has been expanded to include arts, humanities, social sciences, business and law, and staff working in professional and support roles, and the experience of trans staff and student, as well as recognising all gender identities. It is used across the globe to address gender inequality in HE more broadly, in all subjects, and not just barriers to progression that affect women.

The OU submitted its first institutional submission in 2013 gaining a Bronze award and was renewed in 2016 and 2021. We have undertaken a gap analysis of what is required to apply for Silver in future.

At a departmental level, we aim for all Schools to have applied for an award by 2023. Currently, the Schools of Physical Sciences, Engineering and Innovation, Computing and Communication and Maths and Statsistics in the Faculty of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), and the Knowledge Media Institute hold a Silver award, and we have Bronze awards for the School Life Health & Chemical Sciences in STEM. In addition, we have expanded beyond STEM and have recently been successful with the following bronze awards in: The Business School (FBL) and Early Years, Childhood and Sport (Faculty of Wellbeing, Education and Language Studies (WELS)). In 2023 the three Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences schools will be working towards their first awards, as well as the two remaining schools in WELS and the Law School.
