Knowledge Transfer and Commercialisation process description

The Knowledge Transfer and Commercialisation (KTC) process map sets out the steps undertaken to evaluate and exploit intellectual property (IP) generated through university research.

  1. Full details of IP generated from research outputs are captured in an Invention Disclosure
  2. The invention disclosure is reviewed internally, including IP landscaping checks
  3. An external market assessment may be carried out to establish the commercial potential of the IP
  4. An Exploitation Plan is developed to map out the commercial development activity
  5. The Exploitation plan may be referred to the University’s Knowledge Exchange Board for approval if necessary
  6. Exploitation routes may include licensing the IP for commercial use or the creation of a ‘spin-out’ company
  7. Some proposed Spin-outs may need Vice-Chancelleor's Executive approval dependent upon the likely investment and equity requirements
  8. The KTC process map also notes responsibility for the protection and management of University IP
