OU academics are to present at this year’s ACM CHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems, which takes place in Montreal from 21-26 April 2018.
Some of the papers to be presented by academics in Computing and Communications are:
Research findings into the usability of smart phone apps for individuals with Type 1 diabetes.
OU academics: Dmitri Katz, Professor Blaine Price, Dr Simon Holland
Research which assesses the challenges of engaging citizens, particularly those who are disadvantaged, in the design of their city.
OU academics: Dr Daniel Gooch, Matthew Barker, Dr Lorraine Hudson, Dr Ryan Kelly, Professor Janet van der Linden, Professor Gerd Kortuem, Professor Marian Petre
Research which describes the researchers’ experience of working with blind and visually impaired people to create interactive art objects that are personal to them, through a participatory making process using electronic textiles (e-textiles) and hands-on crafting techniques. The research addresses how effective the approach was in enabling participants to tell their own stories and feel in control of the design and making process.
OU academics: Emilie Giles, Professor Janet van der Linden, Professor Marian Petre
Many people with long-term neurological and neurodegenerative conditions such as stroke, brain injury, multiple sclerosis or Parkinson’s disease suffer from an impaired walking gait pattern. OU researchers are designing, developing, and testing a closed-loop system to provide adaptive haptic rhythmic cues for sustainable self-managed long-term use outside the lab by survivors of stroke, and other neurological conditions, in their everyday lives.
OU academics: Riasat Islam, Dr Simon Holland, Professor Blaine Price, Theodoros Georgiou, Dr Paul Mulholland
The team built a physical pain logging device for use in hospital and found it worked better than a virtual device on a tablet and it provides more honest and frequent data than nurses asking patients for their pain level.
OU Academics: Professor Blaine Price, Ryan Kelly, Vikram Mehta, Ciaran McCormick
The conference is considered to be the premier international conference of Human-Computer Interaction.
