OU Research joins £14 million Doctoral Training Partnership

The OU is one of three partners in the Grand Union Economic and Social Research Council Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP) which funds PhD students.

The partnership, which includes Brunel University and the University of Oxford, builds on the recognised research and doctoral training strengths of all three institutions and has been awarded £14 million funding for a minimum of 31 studentships a year.

In year 1, the OU has funded seven students, who attended the launch event on Friday 20 October.

The Grand Union comprises five thematic clusters containing 24 doctoral training pathways, the majority of which are single discipline pathways led by the University of Oxford. The Open University is leading four inter-disciplinary pathways (Citizenship, Security, Development Policy and Practice and Innovating in Learning) and jointly participating in two other pathways, one inter-disciplinary, Health and Wellbeing, and one single discipline, Geography.

The partnership will run until 2023.

Speaking about the scheme, Professor Steve Pile, OU Professor of Human Geography said: “This is an excellent opportunity for The Open University to strengthen research collaborations with world class academics across the three universities and to enhance shared best practice in doctoral training with partner institutions.”
