New study reveals how microbial life thrives in one of Earth's harshest environments

Researchers from AstrobiologyOU have uncovered new insights into how microscopic life survives in Lake Karum, Ethiopia, one of the world's most extreme saline environments.

Despite its highly salty conditions, Lake Karum and the surrounding salt flats support diverse communities of microorganisms. By analysing DNA recovered from these environments, the research team investigated how microbial life adapts and functions under conditions that would be hostile to most forms of life on Earth.

The study found that many of the microorganisms carry genes linked to key environmental processes, including carbon and nitrogen cycling. While the microbial communities inhabiting the lake and neighbouring salt flats were often different, the researchers discovered that they frequently performed similar ecological functions, suggesting that distinct microorganisms can play comparable roles within these extreme ecosystems.

The research also uncovered previously unrecognised metabolic diversity across several groups of microorganisms, providing new insights into how life adapts to challenging environments and helping scientists better understand how these ecosystems operate.

The international collaboration brought together researchers from The Open University, the University of Essex, Addis Ababa Science and Technology University and Mekelle University in Ethiopia, the Centro de Astrobiología in Spain, and the University of Bologna in Italy.

Dr Michael Macey, from The Open University, said, "Studying life in extreme environments like Lake Karum helps us understand the remarkable adaptability of microorganisms and the hidden roles they play in keeping ecosystems functioning."

The findings contribute to a growing understanding of life in extreme environments and may also help inform future astrobiology research exploring where life could exist beyond Earth.
