Professional biography

Steve is a staff tutor in the School of Computing Communications, having joined the Open University (OU) in 2024.  Prior to working at the OU, his academic experience encompasses time as an associate dean at a private HE provider, an associate professor of cloud computing, as well as lecturer and senior lectureships in computing at Birmingham City University.

Steve graduated with a degree in geology from the University of Oxford before going on to study for a master’s degree in computer science at the University of Manchester, as well as a postgraduate diploma in education and a postgraduate certificate in research practice from Birmingham City University.  He holds over twenty technical certifications.  

After graduation, Steve worked for a leading financial software house. His main responsibilities covered technical support, software quality control, software development and systems administration. He has also spent time in the voluntary sector supporting and building IT systems for charities and other voluntary organisations.  He continues to work as a consultant both inside and outside higher education and has experience of KTP, KEEN and other academic/industrial collaborations.

Externally, he is a subject-matter-expert for the Linux Professional Institute and a member of their Academic Advisory Board. He is also an experienced educational consultant and external examiner, regularly sitting on degree validation panels.

Research interests

Steve has published papers on open-source software, software-defined networks and learning technologies.  His current research interests focus around automating feedback for student assessments.

Teaching interests

Steve's main teaching interests include cloud computing, operating systems, networking, IT security, systems integration, learning technologies and IT management.  He is an experienced professional trainer in fields such as academic practice, Linux, Windows server technologies, networking and cloud computing.
