Professional biography
Professor Sarah Earle joined The Open University in 2005. She has a BA (Hons) in Applied Social Sciences [Sociology & Social Policy] and a PhD in Sociology. Before joining The Open University she held academic and research posts at Northampton University, Birmingham City University, Coventry University and Nottingham Trent University.
Sarah is part of the Univerity's Open Societal Challenges Programme team and is the lead for the 'Living Well' challenges. She is also responsible for the development of REF strategy in the School of Health, Wellbeing and Social Care in the Faculty of Wellbeing, Education and Language Studies and is the University's REF Strategy Chair for UoA: 20 (Social Work and Social Policy). Sarah has held a number of other roles within the University including: Director of the University's Strategic Interdisciplinary Research Area (SRA) in Health & Wellbeing (2016-2022), Associate Dean Research, Enterprise & Scholarship for the Faculty of Health & Social Care (2009-2016); Acting Head of Department and Programme Director for Health & Social Care (2007-2009).
Research interests
Through a sustained commitment to interdisciplinary research that connects theory with policy and practice, Sarah's research adopts inclusive methodologies to shape theoretical and conceptual debates within the sociology of health and health care. Her research focuses in particular on how those whose reproductive and sexual lives are defined as non-normative are denied reproductive and sexual citizenship, and on how this lack of agency impacts access to services and quality of life.

Due to advances in medical treatment and care, increasing numbers of young people with life-limiting or life-threatening conditions are surviving into adulthood (Beresford and Stuttard, 2014), but a growing body of evidence suggests that they are not always equipped to do so, and that there is an absence of tailored support in the important area of sex, intimacy and relationships (The Open University Sexuality Alliance with Together for Short Lives, 2016). Recent research suggests that establishing and maintaining relationships contributes significantly to the emotional wellbeing of young people (Abbott and Carpenter, 2016)Young people have said that socialising, having friends or being in an intimate relationship is an important part of growing up and having a ‘normal’ life. However, many people consider sex to be private and taboo (Richardson, 1998). Talking about sex is therefore often seen as difficult or embarrassing. In the context of young people whose lives are shortened, these conversations can be even more difficult. Recent research suggests that, often, these conversations never even take place. We know that sex, intimacy and relationships are important but that there is an unmet need and an absence of services and support in this field. The ‘Talking about… sex and relationships’ project aims to support young people with this neglected area of transition into adult life. The project is designed to empower young people to be able to have conversations about sex, intimacy and relationships with other young people and with those who provide care and support including family members, carers and professional staff. In doing so, the project develops the confidence and skills of young people. At the same time, the project seeks to support and empower professionals in the adult sector to talk about sex and relationships by having a better understanding of the views and experiences of young people themselves. | |||

Pre-conception care for women with diabetes (K-13-017-SE)

Rates of diabetes in pregnancy are increasing rapidly; a trend that looks likely to continue. Diabetes can lead to serious complications for women and babies during pregnancy and birth. Pre-conception care is known to have a positive impact on these health risks; however, the uptake can be low and it is not clear how improve this. Why do some women not access pre-conception services? Understanding that women do not always ‘plan’ a pregnancy will be part of the solution. This research aims to review the existing literature in the field and conduct empirical work to understand why women with pre-existing diabetes do, or do not, access pre-conception care, focusing specifically on the factors that facilitate or discourage uptake. The research also aims to investigate the views of staff and stakeholders in this area to explore their views on existing and future provision of services. This research is funded by the NIHR’s HTA programme and is being conducted by The Open University in collaboration with Birmingham Heartlands Hospital and University of Birmingham. | |||

Contraceptive choices for women with learning disabilities’ is an Open University research project, supported by a grant from Open Society Foundations (Grant No: OR2014-12989). This inclusive project set out to explore women’s contraceptive decision-making and sought to include women with mild to moderate learning disabilities as well as women with high support needs. Between December 2014 and April 2015 we interviewed 19 women living in several locations across the United Kingdom. | |||

MacIntyre Care has, in recent years, rolled out ‘Great Interactions’, a comprehensive change management initiative to ensure that front line staff focus on the quality of the relationship between them and service users, their families, advocates and friends. In addition to training, this initiative has encompassed personality profiling, changes to recruitment practice, to appraisals and to first line manager practice; and tools for reflective practice. The Theory of Change is that workforce ‘behaviour’ rather than ‘values’ is the key to increasing choice and control in the lives of people with learning disabilities. This project evaluates the impact of ‘Great Interactions’ to provide evidence to influence commissioners to move away from commissioning based on cost and risk aversion to outcomes based commissioning. Since 1966, when it was founded by a parent of a disabled child, MacIntyre has grown to provide support services for over 1,000 children and adults with learning disabilities. To mark its first fifty years, in January 2016 MacInytre Care will launch a celebratory Jubilee history. Using a rich mixture of media including audio, video, photographs, illustrations and text, the Open University research team has worked with MacIntyre to develop an inclusive, interactive and accessible website that celebrates the history of MacIntyre and records their history within the context of the broader changes in learning disability policies and practices. | |||
