Professional biography

I initially joined the OU as a student in January 2006, becoming an Associate Lecturer in January 2009.  I previously worked at Sheffield Hallam University and became a Staff Tutor here in the School in September 2021.  I am currently the Director of Teaching for Mathematics and Statistics as of August 2023.

I completed my initial studies in Mathematics and Statistics at the OU and obtained the School's degrees in both Mathematics and Mathematics and Statistics, as well as the MSc in Mathematics, and followed this with a PhD in Applied Bayesian Statistics at the University of Southampton.  I also hold an undergraduate degree in Modern Languages from the University of St. Andrews and have undertaken postgraduate study in Translation at the University of the West of England (UWE).

Research interests

I am interested in the applications of Bayesian inference to practical problems.  I am currently jointly supervising one PhD student in the School who is considering the elicitation of prior beliefs from experts and ways to make the processes for this more user friendly.  I have previously supervised to completion three PhD students in the area of text mining and sentiment analysis.

Teaching interests

I am currently on the Module Teams for M208 (Pure Mathematics) and M348 (Applied Statistical Modelling).  I have previously been on the Module Teams for M140 (Introducing Statistics) and M347 (Mathematical Statistics).

As an Associate Lecturer, I have at various times taught on the modules MST121 (Using Mathematics), MST124 (Essential Mathematics 1), M208 (Pure Mathematics), M337 (Complex Analysis), M347 (Mathematical Statistics) and M832 (Approximation Theory).

Impact and engagement

I am currently a member of the Professional Affairs Committee (PAC) at the Royal Statistical Society (RSS).  This committee oversees all professional aspects of the Society's work. This includes conferring Data Analyst, Graduate and Chartered Statistician status to qualified members, accrediting university and training courses as well as continuing professional development for statisticians.
