Professional biography

Beatriz Mingo studied at the Universidad Autonoma de Madrid (Spain), where she completed her BsC and MsC in 2009. Between 2007 and 2009 she participated in the Undergraduate Trainee program at the European Space Astronomy Centre (ESAC, Spain), where she studied quasar spectra using data from XMM-Newton's RGS instrument. Beatriz then moved to the UK to start a PhD at the University of Hertfordshire with Prof. Martin Hardcastle, where she further specialised in core and extended emission from radio-loud AGN. After completing her PhD in 2013, she moved to the University of Leicester, to work in the ARCHES (EU FP7) project, where she designed and led the main science case on multiwavelength AGN studies, and contributed to the cross-correlation tool and multi-wavelength catalogue development and testing. In 2016 she became part of the Swift team, carrying out calibration duties for the XRT instrument. Beatriz is currently a research fellow at the Open University and part of the LOFAR collaboration, carrying out work on the properties, environments, and evolution of radio-loud AGN using data from the LOFAR surveys. She is also an Associate Lecturer (tutor) for SXPS 288 (Remote Experiments in Physics and Space).

Research interests

My research interests focus mainly on radio-loud active galactic nuclei (AGN). I currently work mostly LOFAR and VLA radio observations of these extragalactic objects, along with multiwavelength data from mid-IR, optical, and X-ray surveys, to derive the properties of the sources, the relationship of the AGN with their host galaxies, and their underlying physics. Having access to large statistical samples allows me to analyse how these parameters change and evolve across different AGN populations. I am particularly interested in understanding the life cycles of AGN, the relationship between their kinetic (jet) and radiative (luminosity) output, and how they differ from X-ray binaries, especially in low-power scenarios.

My recent work with the LOFAR LoTSS survey provides a window into the challenges we will face with deep, wide-area radio surveys, and it has been selected as one of the 10 scientific highlights for the tenth anniversary of LOFAR. As we start detecting fainter populations and longer activity cycles, radio luminosity alone is no longer a good proxy for radio AGN morphology: the host-galaxy and large-scale environmental properties become key to understanding the evolution of the jets and where their energy is deposited. 

I am part of the SKA extragalactic continuum science working group, the Athena science working group on feedback in local AGN and star forming galaxies, and the Lynx science working group on evolution of structure and AGN populations. I have participated on several white papers for future X-ray surveys (XIPE, Lynx, and two mission concepts for ESA's Voyage 2050 call). I am also part of the LOFAR Surveys Key Science Project, the WEAVE-LOFAR collaboration, and a member of the ES2-COSMOS and S2LXS JCMT legacy surveys.

Teaching interests

I have carried out a variety of teaching, marking, and support tasks on mathematics and physics throughout my different roles. At the OU I am currently an associate lecturer on the SXPS 288 module (Remote Experiments Physics and Space), in which I tutor a group of 20 students. I havepreviously been an AL for SM 123 (Physics and Space), for which I also provided extra support, and currently provide specialist advice on SXP 390 (Radiation and Matter) modules. Between 2018 and 2022 I was the ARROW radio telescope project lead for SXPS 288.

I am currently co-supervising one OU astronomy PhD student, Bonny Barkus.

Impact and engagement

I am a regular participant in public engagement events. Most recently I have carried out a series of talks with Spanish schoolchildren as part of the Talk to Them: Women in Astronomy initiative to promote the visibility of female astronomers, led by Dr Nayra Rodriguez at the Instituto de Astrofisica de Canarias (IAC). I have also recently participated in one of the "Ask the Expert" engagement sessions aimed at the general public.

I am a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society, and a member of the European Astronomical Society. I am also actively involved in work on sustainability in astronomy, through my membership of Astronomers for Planet Earth (A4E). I have co-led the organisation of the 2022 A4E global symposium, with nearly 600 global attendees (videos here), and organised a local OU mini-workshop on sustainability in astronomy.
