Research informed interactive to promote safer driving
A research-informed interactive which challenges users to see if they can drive safely and work effectively at the same time, has been launched during Road safety week.
The interactive: The mobile office challenge, is now live and challenges users to spot hazards on the road while keeping track of a work telephone call.
It is based on research by Dr Gemma Briggs from the Open University’s Forensic Cognition Research Group, which aims to save lives by informing Government policy. Her team provides new evidenced-based explanations for the cognitive distraction drivers experience when using a hands-free phone.
Describing the impact of her research Dr Briggs said:
“Our research shows that having two eyes on the road, and both hands on the wheel, does not in itself equate to safe driving. There is no scientific justification for banning hand-held phones but allowing hands-free use.”
