Virtual worlds for real experiences
Professor Shailey Minocha’s inaugural lecture on Virtual worlds for real experiences took place on Tuesday 20 June 2017.
In her lecture, Professor Minocha showed how virtual worlds bridge time and places, interleaving the virtual with the real – allowing people to communicate and collaborate with those whom they may have never met, experience places they may never be able to visit, shop, learn, and do research.
Virtual worlds also give us a means to overcome physical limitations to address problems such as loneliness, geographical isolation, and cultural differences and Professor Minocha drew on her research into social isolation and loneliness in older people to describe how her research is helping them.

About Professor Minocha
Shailey Minocha is a Professor in the Faculty of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics at The Open University. Her research has two strands: learning technologies and social computing.
