OU Bake your Research student winners

As the UK prepares for the final of The Great British Bake Off 2020, the winners of the OU student Bake your Research competition have been announced. Those that won in the 1st prize category are as follows:

Devyani Gajjar in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences for a cake representing her PhD which  investigates: Can space technologies be used inclusively to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals?

Heidi Thiemann, in the Faculty of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics for research which focuses on different aspects of stellar variability - how stars change in brightness over time and the underlying astrophysical properties behind this.

Katie Jones in the Faculty of Wellbeing Education and Language Studies for her research which intends to reveal the triggers that women associate with their experiences of postnatal anxiety.

Prizes were also awarded in the 2nd and 3rd prize categories and in the staff category.

An email comment from an OU part time student said: “Yummy - they are unbelievably awesome bakes - what talent, what creativity, what impeccable taste!”

Dr Lindsay O’Dell, Director of the OU Graduate School said:

“There were a large number of entries with really wonderful contributions that explained students’ research in a short abstract and in cake/baked form. Who knew that you could represent Mars, the Sustainable Development Goals, a home water birth, students’ mental health and many more research topics in cake?”
