Day 135, Year of #Mygration: Knowledge Brokers in Migrant Third Sector Organisations

The Open University and Oxford University are working in collaboration to hold a free interactive workshop to address the brokering role of refugee and migrant front-line staff in the migration third sector. It proposes a platform for exchange on the potential innovations as well as challenges that emerge when the identities and experiences of front-line staff in the migration third sector overlap with that of service users.

The purpose of the workshop is to create a space for different stakeholders to reflect on obstacles and opportunities around the status of migrant staff’s experiential knowledge within third sector organisations. We would like to invite a range of stakeholders to the workshop that have experience of the front-line in migrant third sector organisations, including, paid and unpaid roles, case workers and managers. In particular, we welcome asylum seekers and refugees working/volunteering in front- line roles, wishing to attend and share their experiences.

Wednesday 19 September 2018, 10.30 - 16.30

The workshop will be facilitated by the research team, Dr. Vita Terry, Jacqueline Broadhead and Dr. Sara de Jong, who each have practical experience as well as research expertise in migration and the third sector. Through a mixture of different interactive activities we will encourage dialogue and debate. The workshop includes:

• The opportunity to share your experiences and to have your voice heard
• meet other stakeholders and organisations within the migration third sector to build networks, connections, and capacity
• practice-based  solutions  to  better  support  migrant  staff  facing  particular challenges due to their overlapping identities with service users
• mechanisms to ensure that migrant staff’s knowledge informs better practice in the migration third sector
• find out about practice-based solutions that you can take back to your organisation

To encourage equal opportunities to access the workshop we are offering a £50 travel bursary to all registered participants. The workshop will start at 10.30 and include a networking lunch, and will finish by 16:30. The event is being held at Sheffield Quakers, 10 St James' St, Sheffield, S1 2EW.
