Drawing on a qualitative study of senders of remittances among a group of UK-based senders, Professor Nicola Yeates and Dr Owusu-Sykere highlight key aspects of remittance sending practices and the social contexts (including of social protection) that generate, propel and sustain sending. They draw attention to the importance of transnational family and kin networks as a factor in sending dynamics and international development finance more generally, and highlight the importance of a transnational perspective for understanding contemporary work and welfare in Britain and beyond.

This seminar was held at The Open University’s Milton Keynes campus on 31 January 2018, and is part of the OU’s International Development Seminar Series.

Dr Freda Owusu-Sykere gained her PhD at The Open University in 2014, and is a Visiting Research Fellow with the Department of Social Policy and Criminology.

Professor Nicola Yeates is Professor of Social Policy in the Deptartment of Social Policy and Criminology.
