The need to address the threat posed by cyber security attacks, will be highlighted in an OU lecture on Tuesday 27 March 2018.

In From Zero Day to Doomsday, Mike Richards, Senior Lecturer in Computing in the OU’s Faculty of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics’ School of Computing and Communications, will focus on the damage caused by the WannaCry ransomware cyber attack, which had serious implications last year for the NHS and businesses around the world.

Mike said: “We need to talk about the potential threat from hidden software bugs that are being exploited by criminals and governments alike with the intention of causing harm to the computer systems that we all rely on.”

Mike Richards joined The Open University in 1996 to help trial teaching over the Internet. Since then he has taught courses including an introduction to robotics, playful computer programming, and the internet of things. Most recently he has been writing about aspects of computer security from malicious software to cybercrime and cyberwar.

Mike’s lecture is inspired by his teaching for the OU Module TM112 Introduction to computing and information technology, which will run from April October 2018. Watch the video to hear what Mike has to say about his lecture:

After his lecture, Mike will be joined by a panel of OU cyber security experts to discuss the topic in more detail:

  • Dr Mike Richards, Senior Lecturer in Computing
  • Dr Amel Bennaceur, Lecturer in Computing and Communications
  • Nick Clansey, Information Security Specialist, IT
  • Ray Corrigan, Staff Tutor, Computing and Communications
